Mattson Tomlin clarifies the future of “Terminator Zero” on Netflix

Following a wave of rumors suggesting the cancellation of the ambitious anime series Terminator Zero, its showrunner, Mattson Tomlin, has come forward to clarify the situation. Through his social media accounts, Tomlin confirmed that the series has not been scrapped by Netflix, but is currently on hold awaiting the green light for new episodes.

The confusion arose from misinterpreted posts about the status of production at Production I.G. Tomlin clarified that while there is no immediate confirmation of a second season, this is part of the streaming platform’s normal renewal cycle. “Don’t believe everything you read; the story of Eiko and the Terminators still has a lot to offer,” the screenwriter paraphrased in response to fans’ concerns.

Terminator Zero was met with positive reviews for its focus on horror and existential science fiction, moving away from the latest film installments in the saga to embrace a purely Japanese anime aesthetic. The series premiered in August 2024, and its performance in viewing hours will be the determining factor for its continuation.
Technical data:

  • Studio: Production I.G.
  • Director: Kenji Kamiyama (Clarification: Mattson Tomlin is showrunner).
  • Release date: August 29, 2024 (Season 1).
  • Synopsis: A scientist in 1997 is pursued by an assassin from the future as he attempts to launch an artificial intelligence system to rival Skynet.
In today’s streaming environment, silence is often interpreted as cancellation. However, for a work produced by Production I.G, development times are often longer. Terminator Zero achieved something that seemed impossible: revitalizing the franchise with a fresh and violent vision. Tomlin’s clarification is a relief, but also a reminder that on Netflix, audience support is the only real fuel for survival.
