Youjo Senki (Tanya the Evil): Essential War Isekai

Release date: January 6, 2017. Youjo Senki: Saga of Evil Tanya is an anime series from Studio NUT that adapts Carlo Zen’s light novel. Broadcast in 2017, it tells the story of Tanya Degurechaff, who appears to be a blue-eyed girl but is actually the reincarnation of an amoral, atheist Japanese executive. After a confrontation with a divine entity (“Being X”), the man is sent to another world similar to an alternate version of World War I, where he must join the army to prevent his soul from being damned.
This anime stands out for several reasons:

  • Original and dark plot: It combines war and supernatural elements. Tanya, with her cynical and ruthless mind in a child’s body, offers a unique protagonist. As the synopsis points out, “Tanya Degurechaff looks like an innocent little girl. However, she is a Japanese executive who has been reincarnated in an alternate magical world in a time similar to World War I.”
  • Military epic: The conflict takes place in a world of war with magic. The series revolves around tactics, aerial battles with magic, and Tanya’s atheistic philosophy versus the divine entity. The dark atmosphere and combat scenes are intense and cinematic.
  • Critical recommendation: Despite its serious tone, many fans consider it one of the best isekai series because of its execution. A review on a Spanish blog summarizes that “it is a very good anime that I recommend,” noting that although it is not a “work of art,” it is worthwhile for its quality.
In short, Youjo Senki (or Tanya the Evil) is an anime recommended for those who enjoy war stories with a fantastical twist and complex characters. Its originality in premise and development make it stand out within the isekai and war genres.
